Local 5G activities – Merton, Greater London

Dear Supporters,
Hope all is well with you.  A warm welcome to people I met at the Stand In The Light festival at the end of May.  I very much enjoyed meeting and chatting with you,  it’s nice to have people from all over the UK join us.   I mentioned I had a selection of videos of varying styles and length to get into the issue in a painless and even entertaining way.  They can be found here– I particularly recommend  ‘5G Trojan A Horse’.

1 Update on Masts
We had submitted representations for a mast in Durnsford Road that went to appeal.  Thanks to everyone who uploaded submissions on the Planning Inspectorate website, we were successful on appeal and the mast was refused.
There were two other masts we objected to:
24/P1101 Opp. Fairgreen Parade West Mitcham CR4 3NA.  Closing Date 18-05-2024
24/P1132 Raynes Park Sports Ground Taunton Avenue, London SW20 0BH Closing Date 30-05-2024

24/P1101 has been refused, awaiting the decision on 24/P1132.
There was a mast I took pictures of in Mitcham/Colliers Wood which was recently installed for which I could not find an application on Merton Council website.  My thanks to Mitcham Cricket Green Community & Heritage for looking into this.  It turns out the mast was approved in March 2021, three years prior to its actual installation.  Again the ICNIRP certificate of conformity was approved by Three UK Limited, a company that was dissolved in November 2015.
There was a mast enlargement that went through in 28 days without consultation.  The Development Management Area Manager got back to me on it and let me know that it was a Notification application and does not require public consultation.  It was 24/P0996, a mast enlargement opposite AELTC Practice Courts Church Road Wimbledon for which notification was considered sufficient.  However 24/P1132 was also a mast enlargement but it went through public consultation via the prior approval process.  I have written to him again to get clarification on this apparent inconsistency.
2 Update on Court Action
Independent local authority risk assessments.jpg
An important interview with Karen Churchill and Steven Thomas who together with Neil McDougal are flagging up the fact that local authorities are not fulfilling their duties to independently assess public risk using the long-established precautionary principle of 5G/man-made RF infrastructure deployment.  https://youtu.be/k0-TwJWW9n4
The video contains  a lot of useful info, which has been written up below:
Excellent piece by Gillian Jamieson goes through the arguments presented where the Judge agrees with the point that the existence of an ICNIRP Declaration of Conformity does not protect the health of those with metal and other implants.
3 Update on International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)
IARC Again Asked to Review RF Cancer Risk, Just Not Right Away. Same Advice Was Given in 2019
4 What’s On
Hustings MONDAY 24 JUNE Doors Open: 7:00PM Starts: 7:30PM

Given our experience should we bother talking to our reps?  It’s a fair question.  It’s true we have so far been wilfully ignored unless we do an FOI or submit questions at full council meetings.  However if we were to pick a time to get some commitments in writing from councillors and prospective MPs it would be now.  They are seeking our vote and they are very uncertain about how things will go at this election, there is pressure from more independents standing as well. May as well, now or never in my view.   Here are examples of MPs responding to public pressure.  Here are a couple of emails I’ve sent to my MP and councillors which you may want adapt for your use.
There’s also hustings taking place on 📣 MONDAY 24 JUNE Doors Open: 7:00PM Starts: 7:30PM, 📍 Merton Arts Space, Wimbledon Library SW19 (entrance on Compton Road).  Here’s who have been announced as being there so far:
Conservative: Danielle Dunfield-Prayero
Green: Rachel Brooks
Labour: Eleanor Stringer
Liberal Democrats: Paul Kohler
Reform UK: Ben Cronin

Workers Party: Aaron Mafi

City of Bath Smart City 5G trials – ‘Rally for Sanity’ 7th July 2024, 2pm outside the Guildhall BA1 1JG
Rally For Sanity 7 July (1).jpg Rally For Sanity 7 July(2).jpg
There will be a ‘Rally for Sanity’ to express widespread public rejection of this pilot – without risk assessment or public consultation.  What is the pilot scheme really for ? Do we really need it?
Bathnes are denying our right to be protected and have abandoned public consultation, both are unlawful.  More info here: https://rfinfo.co.uk/smartcity/
5 Fraud in Science

It’s been going on for a long time and they make for interesting stories:
  • 2 min VIDEO: Dr George Carlo: The Wireless Industry is Committing Scientific Fraud. The video below is 2 minutes.  You can see this video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsv0k5zvRXA
  • 15 min VIDEO: Big Wireless War Gamed the Science on Risks While Making Customers Addicted to Their Phones : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=un-vXIzIIOo&t=359s
  • 10 mins of 30min VIDEO (Important): This is a valuable film from Panorama broadcast in May 2007.  Shows how WHO and ICNIRP does not reflect scientific evidence on harms.  It features Professor Henry Lai, a world authority, who was put under great pressure after publishing evidence of harms and Mike Repacholi who set WHO’s position and founded the ICNIRP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k5gnA-PeXc&t=1267s   More about Mike Repachole here: https://microwavenews.com/news-center/repacholi-half-who-emf-project-funding-came-industry
  • 13 min VIDEO: In April 2019 The BBC acted as if the Panorama documentary never happened https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70tEANB34cQ
  • 30 min VIDEO: Here Prof Tom Butler and and Claire Edwards discuss among other things BBC’s reporting on 5G harms and particularly damaging frequency modulation in WiFi, 4G and 5G  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nYSvUF4dBQ
  • SLIDES ATTACHED (Important historical context): David Gee, Visiting Fellow, Centre for Pollution Research and Policy, Brunel University, London  produced the 2 volume Late Lessons From Early Warnings. He brings out similarities between 5G and other hazardous agents.  His work used insights from the histories of previous technologies which makes clear the wisdom of prudent foresight with current technologies so as to minimise harm whilst stimulating benefits and stimulating innovation.  These similarities include issues such as: much initial hype about claimed benefit of the emerging technology; a failure to systematically and independently scrutinise and justify the claimed pros and cons of the new technology.  Both these similarities apply to 5G, along with another 10 such as the harassment of early warning scientists.  All these similarities are cited in David’s evidence to parliament.
  • ARTICLE (Downloadable and useful in discussions): Mendip Council refuses a mast based on harms, they took a precautionary approach.  A physics teacher who is a Mendip councillor voted for the mast.  He explained his reasons clearly as to why he thought there was no harm, it was useful as they are the most common reasons put forward when people reassure the public (similar to the BBC broadcast above in April 2019) that there is no cause for concern. It was useful because it gave me the opportunity to examine his commonly held position https://rfinfo.co.uk/mendip-council-health-impact-based-mast-refusal/
  • 10 min VIDEO: Before 5G was deployed around 2019, there were global calls for a pause from some governments, activists, and scientists until the health impacts could be studied. But that didn’t happen. Earlier in 2024  a big government study on the possible danger of wireless radiation was abruptly halted midstream. This video contains views from both sides (industry and Devra Davis of ehtrust.org as to what might be going on:  https://youtu.be/6AKX_Uj3luM

6 Brief Stories of how honest scientists are sometimes treated:
Jerry Phillips

During the 1990’s, Biochemist Jerry Phillips was hired by cellphone giant Motorola to study the effects of the RF Radiation emitted by cell phones. Phillips and his colleagues looked at the effects of different RF signals on rats, and on cells in a dish. Phillips say the relationship between him, and his employer was initially cordial, but soured once he submitted research data to Motorola which found harmful effects to the DNA structure as a result of exposure to radio-frequency radiation. The negative results were not to Motorola’s liking, and they began putting pressure on him.  See this independent investigation from the year 2000: ‘Public Exposure: DNA, Democracy and the ‘Wireless Revolution”  It’s definitely worth watching fully but the portions relevant to the above are at these timestamps: 33:05-33:40;  34:35-35;  35:06-35:30
Dr Henry Lai & Narendra Singh

In another example of industry attempting to influence research, we have Dr. Henry Lai, of the University of Washington, and fellow researcher, Narendra Singh. The researchers were looking at the effects of non-ionizing radiation.  They used a level of radiation considered safe by FCC standards and found that the DNA in the brain cells of the rats was damaged or broken by exposure to it.
After publishing the research in 1995, Dr. Lai would later learn of a full-scale effort to discredit the experiments. Lai and Singh caused controversy when they publicly complained about restrictions placed on their research by their funders, the Wireless Technology Research (WTR) program. In response to this public action, the head of the WTR sent a memo asking then-university president Richard McCormick to fire Lai and Singh. McCormick refused, but the message was clear. Get rid of anyone who makes our products look bad.  In a leaked internal Motorola memo executives claimed to have succeed in “War-Gaming ” the Lai-Singh experiments.
“This shocked me,” Lai says, “As a scientist doing research, I was not expecting to be involved in a political situation. It opened my eyes on how games are played in the world of business. You don’t bite the hand that feeds you. The pressure is very impressive.”
Dr Kent Chamberlin

Dr Kent Chamberlin presented findings of the New Hampshire Commission to a town considering adding cell antennas to a water tower. The Brazil study was used to show the dangers of living near such antennas. In the town’s next meeting, they brought in a company that the town paid to evaluate the proposed installation:
  • As seen in a recording of their presentation, the presenters claimed to be impartial
  • The industry has paid consultants to discredit studies such as the New Hampshire Commission Report.
  • The second presenter omits that he is being paid by the telecommunications industry, although his work for them is documented here.
  • The second presenter stated that “I’m not presenting my views about this”, not mentioning that he submitted a paper challenging the findings of the Brazil report
  • He also did not mention that the authors of the Brazil study published a response to his criticisms
  • He only referenced government agency reports to discredit the paper. This is significant because the Commission found that many of the agencies involved in regulating radiation levels are captured.
Captured Agencies No Longer Representing Public Interest- a Clue to why we are Being Ignored at all levels of Government

The Captured Agency report makes it clear that this type of corruption takes place because of “the free flow of executive leadership between the FCC and the industries it presumably oversees”. For example, at the time of the report’s release, the Chairman of the FCC was Tom Wheeler, a man with deep ties to the Big Wireless industry. In 2013, Wheeler was nominated as FCC chairman by former President Obama after raising more than $700,000 for his presidential campaigns. Wheeler lead the two most powerful industry lobbying groups: The National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA) and the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association, or, the CTIA.  See the 2016 video where he talks about 5G may be subject yourself to 5 mins from the 25 minute point, warm and cuddly he isn’t.

The chairman of the FCC after Wheeler could also be seen as another example of a “captured agency” in action. Ajit Pai, a lawyer chairman of the FCC until 2021, served as Associate General Counsel at Verizon Communications Inc. between 2001 and 2003, where he handled competition and regulatory matters. Pai was appointed to the FCC by Barack Obama in 2012 and then made FCC Chairman by Donald Trump in January 2017.

7 Talking to People
Ultimately success is a numbers game and there has to be a growing grassroots to get things really moving, so do share this newsletter and check out the tips in https://reachingpeople.net/.  A gentleman I met at the Stand In The Light festival used the info on the website to engage with a person who seem almost violently in opposition.  He approached then in contrast in a friendly, curious way to ask why he was upset and if there was something in particular that bothered him.  By being relaxed and open and asking questions it eased the situation dramatically.  A key point he suggested was to gently get people to  define their terms so there is no misunderstanding in meaning and so they examine their own beliefs as they go.
I hope watching the videos shared in this email with others may make chatting about/exploring the topic easy and even enjoyable.
Best wishes,
Asif
